Old but Gold
How does communication work within an enterprise? And what can be done if it is not working well? An analysis at the Mercedes-Benz factory in Bremen.
When the motivation of older employees drops,
it’s not necessarily because of the approaching pension or the rising average age of the staff in general. During my research it became clear that the resentment of the older workers was just the tip of the iceberg. Behind it I’ve spotted some profound communicative problems. Those were responsible for the bad mood of employees of all ages.
Out of the Ivory Tower and smack into life.
At the end of my bachelor studies it became important to me to apply what I’ve learned in art school to reality. With a fresh and observant look and with a totally different background than most of those working at Mercedes, it was my goal to offer the team leaders a new perspective on their staff’s problems.
Empathy is the most important attribute of a designer.
I interviewed employees during the early shift and listened to their worries and complaints. I analysed the communicative channels which were used by the company and examined whether they worked for the staff. Afterwards I formulated a concept to improve the in-house communication with the aid of Design Thinking and Co-Creation-methods. The team leaders took some of the proposals to heart and implemented them.
